Media Coursework Kit

Hi All

The new cameras, tripods, lighting kit and microphones have FINALLY arrived! Please come to see me as long as you have:

1) Updated your blog with your storyboard and plan
2) Arranged a block of 2 days to film and upload your video with your group (max time you can hire kit for)
3) Have something (or some one strong) to take all the kit away in (its heavy and bulky)

I also plan to teach a session AFTER SCHOOL on Thursday 20th November on Adobe Premiere editing. I strongly suggest you attend - IT1 at 3-30 pm.

Please reply to this post to confirm your places as it will be open to teachers and students.

Finally a huge thank you to you all - you are working very hard and I am really looking forward to seeing the excellent films you have been planning.

Edit/Update blogs

Hello lovelies

Lots of you have been blogging away and keeping me entertained over the last few weeks - well done! I think the prize for most blogs has to go to Fran S - I will think of a suitable reward next week.

Some of your blogs are scarily full, so please take this opportunity to delete old news stories. For those of you who have not updated the preliminary task, please do this asap.

See you next week, enjoy the last bit of the hols!

What is the true state of British Youth today?

Sky news comissioned a photographer to take a series of pictures showing youth culture accross the uk. This links in well with the key concept of representation - do you think it is an accurate reflection of your youth culture?

Reminder to All Students

To both A/s and A/2 students:

Please remember that you should be updating your media blogs at least once per week. There are lots of things you could record but you must:

- Write a short update of what you have been doing in media studies that week

- Post a relevant media story - this should be 'topical' or something of interest to your teachers and other students.

You may also be asked to complete homework and post it on the blog. Video will need to be added at home for the moment (if you don't have access please pass recordings to your teacher who will upload it for you).

Finally, please use common sense when posting on your blog - any offensive or unethical material will be removed and students risk being withdrawn from the course.

IF YOU ARE UNSURE, DON'T POST!!!

Thanks

The A Level Course

What is Media Studies?
From the internet to television, from cinema to video games, much of our waking lives is dominated by consuming, talking about and using the media. This course seeks to broaden and deepen the student’s understanding of the media and the role that it plays in society.

What will you study ?
At AS level, you will learn how to use the shoot and edit video, working on projects in groups, culminating in a piece of coursework where you make the opening of a new film, including the soundtrack and titles using the professional program Final Cut. You will research and plan this project on a group blog. For the exam, you have to be able to analyse a sequence of TV drama, so we will work on building up your skills of analysis. You will also study the way a particular media industry operates, such as the games industry.
At ‘A2’ the coursework involves another group production, this time of a music video and website, again accompanied by a planning blog and this time also by DVD extras, such as a commentary. For the exam, you will study debates about the media through particular case studies and you will be asked to reflect upon the production work undertaken throughout the course using particular critical perspectives to which you will have been introduced.

How will you study this subject ?

There will be analysis of examples of a range of media texts, from music videos to video games. You will use the internet for research, take part in small group and whole class discussions, note-taking and essay writing. In your own time, you will be expected to broaden your research into specific unit related areas. Much of the time will be spent working with others in making media products, so the course is very ‘hands-on’.

Assessment

The coursework in both years is worth 50% of your overall grade and the exam 50%. Both exams involve a mixture of applied skills and knowledge.
